Iris Wendel, daughter of an uber-billionaire control freak, is on a rebellious path. With her college days coming to an end and her trust fund on the line, it’s time to make some changes. But when she drives her roommate to a party at the RTMC compound, the gathering of rugged, sexy, dangerous biker werewolves changes everything for Iris.
* * *
Face-to-face once again with the only woman he’s ever loved, Danny “McGyver” Franklin refuses to let Iris slip through his fingers this time. He’s no longer the poor, backwoods redneck from her past. McGvyer’s a man now — strong, confident, relentless, and a valued member of the RTMC.
* * *
Iris knows Danny is her soul mate, but she’s terrified her father will destroy him all over again. Danny’s playing for keeps, and he’s not about to let anything — or anyone — come between them, especially not Iris’s overbearing father. In a showdown for power and control, can McGyver and his wolf show them who’s boss and hold on to the woman they’ve always loved?
Chapter 1
Iris couldn’t believe her roommate asked to be dropped off at a motorcycle gang’s compound. Her dad refused to allow for an apartment, and this was the problem with living in a university dorm — your roomie was a crapshoot. However, Kelsey had spent two hours helping Iris with her stupid mathematical models assignment the night before, so the least she could do was give her a ride.
“Pull into the compound and roll your window down,” Kelsey told her. “I’ll let them know you’re just dropping me off and then you’ll leave. I’ll get someone to bring me home, but if you ever need to pick me up, you’ll need to pull into the restaurant across the street and tell one of the bouncers you’re here to get me. They’ll either radio so you can get me at the compound, or tell me to walk across the street to you.”
“You’re sure you’ll be safe? These guys are rough.”
“They’d never hurt me, and they won’t let anything happen to me on their watch. It’s a different world, but they aren’t evil. They just play by their own code.”
Iris rolled her window down halfway as she turned into the compound, and a gruff looking man peered in her car. Kelsey leaned across the seats. “She’s just dropping me off. Can she get me closer to the door since it’s raining? Or do I need to get out here?”
He scowled. “Here. Got too much going on right now to let strangers close to the buildings.”
“Okay. Not a problem. She’ll just hang a U and leave.” Iris looked at Kelsey. “Thanks bunches. I should be back by noon tomorrow, but don’t worry if I’m not. Some of us might decide to do something together.”
McGyver went wolf still. A scent hit him he hadn’t smelled in… too long. Not long enough.
His heart slowed. His predator drive kicked in. He was in the guard shack, out of the rain, watching the prospect. Two people had to man the gate, but no sense in both getting wet.
However, he didn’t even notice the rain when he stepped out of the shelter and stalked to the car. Freckles got out and he slid in. Iris jumped and gave a little yelp, and then shook her head as if she were seeing things. “Danny?! What the fuck!”
The sound of her voice was like a punch to the gut, and he could fully breathe in her scent, sitting so close. “Drive to the restaurant, Blueberry.”
The nickname just slipped out. She had crystal clear blue eyes, ringed by a deeper blue that made his heart hurt. He hadn’t looked her in the face yet. He’d have to work up to that. Merely smelling her had him wrecked.
He leaned across her to talk through her window. “Prospect. Tell control I’m at the restaurant and you need backup.” He sat up straight again but still didn’t look at her. Dozer came out of the clubhouse door and started walking towards them, so he was free to leave. “Iris, roll your window up and drive.”
She rolled her window up but didn’t take her foot off the brake. “I ruined your life. You must hate me.”
Her fear smelled rancid, like rotting fruit. Rage spiked through his veins, and his wolf wanted to growl and snarl. The man was equally pissed, but he had to handle her with kid gloves. Being angry with her for being scared wasn’t going to help the situation. He made sure his voice was soft and low.
“Your daddy fucked with my life. Not you. I won’t hu
rt you.”
“You’re still bossy.”
Her fear dissipated. Not gone, but no longer rank. He chuckled. “Drive, Blue.”
His wolf settled a little when she pressed the gas and turned the wheel, but then rose again when she told him, “I’m not going into the motorcycle gang’s restaurant with you. You want to talk, we’ll do it on my turf.”
He suppressed a grin. She still had her spunk. “Not a problem, but I’ll pay. I’m not a kid without resources anymore.” She made a right turn onto the street, and he finally looked at her profile, with the lights of the city flashing through the window as she drove. She was still beautiful enough to make him have to remember to breathe. “It’s a motorcycle club, Blue, not a gang.”
“Kelsey said you aren’t evil, you just have your own rules.”
He started to ask who Kelsey was and realized she must’ve been talking about Freckles. He’d fucked her a few nights earlier, and a few nights before that. He hoped to hell that wasn’t going to cause a problem.
“How close are you and Kelsey?”
“Not very. New school year and we got paired in the same dorm. I’ve only known her a few weeks, but she seems nice enough.”
“You’re going to UTC? What happened to Tulane?”
“It didn’t work out. Neither did Emory, Auburn, the U of A, and… shit. More reasons for you to hate me.”
Her scent went sour. What the fuck had happened?
“Do I need to beat someone up for you?”
Her head spun so fast he almost grabbed the wheel, but she looked back to the road quickly, a shocked look still on her face.
“No.”
A total lie.
He softened his voice. “Who hurt you, Blueberry?”
She shook her head. “Tell me what happened to you, after you left. Daddy had me on lockdown so tight, it was six months before I could try to contact you, and then I couldn’t find you.”
He shrugged. “Went back to bumfuck Alabama, lived with my family and went to the local public school. Not much to tell.”
He’d managed to get a scholarship to a high-falutin’ private boarding school and was already set to go to Georgia Tech, but when he’d been kicked out of school a few months before graduation, the full-ride scholarship had gone away.
“You wanted to stay at school and they sent you away. I wanted to go home and I had to stay. The only thing good about it had been you. I was…” She swung into a pharmacy parking lot and tears ran down her face. “I was so stupid! My father always wins! I can’t fuck your life up again! I’m bad news for you!”
She was driving a grey metallic BMW i8 roadster, which meant daddy was still paying for everything. Would she even want him in her life? She’d probably lose her trust fund or something equally disastrous if her daddy found out the redneck from Sylacauga, Alabama was back in her life. The only thing the city had going for it was that it backed up to the Talladega National Forest, which comes in handy for a family of lone wolves without enough money to rub two nickels together. If you’re in wolf form most of the time, there’s no need for store-bought food or clothes. His mom had needed to stay human a good part of the day to take care of him and his sister before they hit puberty and changed, but he’d rarely seen his father or other relatives in human form. It was no wonder Iris’s dad thought him an animal — he’d been raised as one.
Unlucky for him, he’d been a genius with a thirst for knowledge, and he’d done so well in school, his principal had helped him get the scholarship to the high-falutin’ boarding school.
Three and a half years there, and he’d blown it with a rich girl, gotten kicked out, and been back in the damned sticks.
His fault, not hers.
But that’d been… he did the math in his head. Nine years ago, which would make her twenty-four. Give or take. She should be out of college. Why was she still in a dorm?
Chapter 2
“If my dad finds out you’re in Chattanooga, he’ll pull me out of school, and…” Iris shrugged. “He’ll hurt you. I don’t know how, but he will.”
“I’m not a helpless kid anymore, Blueberry. I can handle your dad, but that’s beside the point. He doesn’t need to know we’re talking. I know he won’t find out we talked in my restaurant, not sure about that if we meet on your turf.”
She sighed. He had a point, but she wasn’t going onto his territory. She didn’t really know him anymore.
He was more confident. Bigger. He was a man now, not a boy. Her lower body clenched at the thoughts of what he might do to her, now that they were both adults. He’d been eighteen to her fifteen, and he’d refused to deflower her, before.
Her dad had still threatened to have him arrested for statutory rape, despite the fact the damned doctor said she was intact.
She got pissed off all over again, just thinking about the humiliation of that damned exam.
“How did you end up here, with your…” She almost said gang but remembered that had annoyed him. “Club.”
“I got work at the Talladega race track, and then with a driver. While we were in Atlanta for a race, I went to a computer club thing there. I’d seen online where they were teaching something I wanted to learn, and I met someone in the MC there. I had a bike because I couldn’t afford a car, not because I especially loved motorcycles, but it got me in. I finished out the year with the driver, and then moved to Atlanta and prospected in. A group splintered off and came to Chattanooga. I followed them up.”
“What do you do for them?” Was he a mechanic? She tried not to shudder. He’d had so much promise. Been so smart.
He chuckled. “I help run their security and other tech. Computers, Blue. It’s what I wanted to do, but I can do it for them without a degree. I’m good. I’m happy. Your dad didn’t fuck up my life, he just sent me on a detour.” He sighed. “Honestly? I have a real family now. I’m happy. Everything worked out okay.”
His face turned to her, but she didn’t look at him. She couldn’t. She also didn’t want to answer the question he was about to ask.
“Your turn. Are you happy? What’s happened with you?”
She shook her head. “I spent the rest of the school year and all summer on lockdown — supervised every second of the day, no electronics except for schoolwork, and I had a security person with me, looking over my shoulder while I used anything connected to the ’net. Even once that stopped, high school was hell without you. I mean, everyone thought I had everything, right? Homecoming Queen. Prom Queen. Head cheerleader. When I struggled too much in a class, my dad just bought something expensive for the school, and voila, a C instead of an F. Magic!”
“You sound bitter.”
“School policy changed, after you and I got caught in the woods. Heavy security, fully paid for by my father. Everyone blamed me. It was truly hell.”
“And Tulane?”
She rolled her eyes. “The sorority house was fun, at first, but they’re just a bunch of rich, brainless bitches. I mean, I guess people think the same about me, but…” she shrugged. “Some of the girls got caught with drugs, so my dad freaked and made me move into a dorm. I hated the dorm and talked him into renting me an apartment, but I didn’t know he had cameras on the place, so he could watch me. Three days later, I was back in a dorm and he’d increased my security.”
“He’s still a control freak.”
“Yeah. He drew a two-hundred-mile circle around Birmingham, and I had to find a college I could get into within his boundary, so I’m not too far away. If I get a degree and bring my GPA up in Chattanooga, UT will let me in next year as a post-grad. I’m getting the business degree my dad insists on, but I’m taking electives in classes I want to take. Once I get my trust fund, I’ll be able to do what I want.”
“When do you get your trust fund?”
“I turn twenty-five next year — in June — but I don’t get it unless I have a college degree in a discipline Daddy approves of. If I buckle down and pass all my classes this year, I’l
l get my degree just in time for the big day.”
“What degree do you want?”
“He complains about the art electives but hasn’t told me I can’t take them. So, eventually, I’ll have a degree in visual arts. I’ve worked it so I’ll be able to get another degree in just two or three more semesters.” She sighed. “Daddy wants me to work for the company, but I can’t. I just can’t.”
Her father was the majority stockholder in a major insurance company, and his only child wasn’t a genius at math. He’d married a supermodel, what had he expected?
Okay, that wasn’t entirely fair. Her mom had been from Budapest and had barely been able to speak English when they’d met. He’d found her as an established model and then helped her become a supermodel with his money and connections. Like Iris, she’d been beholden to him for everything.
“Who hurt you?”
